I've been to 48 states so here are my observations: The accents in the west tend to be less distinctive simply because migration out west wasn't always in a straight line. This is especially true the further west one goes. In Colorado where I live, the accents in Denver tend to resemble the Midwest, while those further south in the state (like Pueblo) are more "southern."
California is a special case since: (1) There have been and continues to be so many immigrants. (2) The original English speakers in the state weren't dominated by any eastern dialect group. Even so, there has become a distinct Southern California dialect which can be traced somewhat from the midwest and in some parts (like Orange County) with a little Southern/Southwest influence.

Everyone in America has a different accent- People in Calif. speaks differently then someone from Montana- And the Mid-west is different yet- Texans have the southern accent -the south-east part of the states usually have a southern drawl while in the north east they still have a different accent- if you are in North Dakota and Minnesota you will find people talking' with a Norwegian accent- So there you go
P.S. What exactly is an "American" accent

There are many different accents used in different regions of the United States. So the answer is yes.
Try to find the program "Do you speak American?" which showed on PBS a couple of years ago. (Maybe your local library will have a copy.) It has many examples of different accents from the United States.

Have you ever spoken to a person from the "Deep South"
Georgia, USA. Love that southern accent. Actually, most
accents are nice to listen to.
People tell me that I have a slight accent, even so I have lived
here for a long time. It is nice to have an accent, that makes
you unique and when you speak people will listen more.
BY my "slight" accent people can actually tell which city
in Europe I am from.

LMAO "American Accent"..no matter where you grow up, you will have a different accent then someone growing up a state away. The more states you skip, the more different the lingo.
It's the same way in any country.

In any case as a French I must say that it is easy to tell whether you are from the USA ( and specially if you are from Texas, your accent is very different ) or the UK from your accent. I could clearly notice it in a JAG episode.

What in the world are you talking about?
Its people who grow up down south that have the ignorant accents. Its like they all grew up homeless and deprived of a good education.
...and don't let me get started on people from NEW YORK!!!!!
