There aren't many breeders relative to the demand for the puppies. Unlike other breeds (say, Chihuahuas), breeders of King Charles are a tight-knit bunch with high standards, and the dogs themselves tned to mature late and have small litters. Both factors limit the expansion of population. Which is probably a good thing.

It's a purebred that wins a lot of awards. Any purebred is going to be expensive, but when you have a breed that is at the top of its class, be sure you can spare an arm or leg!

They are expensive because they are purebred and also because they are very popular at this time (I think since Sex and the City).

Because they are pretty. Although take great caution if you do choose to buy one as they are known for their heart problems and can be even more costly than what you think they are now.

I suggest a hybrid breed (ie cavoodle-cross poodle and cavalier) if you wish to avoid these problems

They are very popular dogs. Supply and demand. They are very cute too I might add.
