Bound's hubby here:

The Colt Match Target HBAR is a heavy barreled target rifle. HBAR stands for heavy barrel ... nothing else!

As shown in the picture, you can not tell the difference between a standard M16/AR15 and an HBAR, with the handguards on! When you remove the handguards, the difference is quite evident, as you compare barrel contours!

The barrel of the standard M16/AR15 is tapered under the handguards as a weight saving measure for a troop rifle. This barrel has basically a wisp contour, but forward of the handguards, it appears as though the rifle has a heavy barrel.

The barrel on an HBAR does not have the narrowed taper under the handguard. Basically, the HBAR barrel maintains a near consistent diameter. The diameter under the barrel is actually a little greater than the diameter forward of the handguards.

One other difference that is not readily visible, is the rifling twist of the barrels. The standard "light contour" barrel of a standard M16/AR15 has a 1 twist in 9" barrel. The HBAR has a 1 twist in 7" barrel. The faster twist on the HBAR allows the rifle to shoot heavier bullets in the 75 to 80 grain range. The slower twist barrel will shoot bullets up to about 70 grains accurately at longer distances.

Good luck!

An HBAR has the heavy part of the barrel ahead of the forward sight base. Under the handguards, the barrel is the standard weight. I prefer barrels that are heavy from the barrel nut all the way out to the muzzle, myself.

HBAR does NOT mean Heavy Barrel ASSAULT Rifle. It simply means Heavy BARrel. An assault rifle is a select-fire weapon-- not your garden variety AR-15. Don't fall for the lies of the gun-grabbing Democrats and other haters of Freedom.

The barrel is heavier than standard, and here the term is just relative to the military grade which has a thinner barrel for wieght purposes.

They call it an HBAR, I wouldn't call it an HBAR, I don't think it even has a bull barrel. Looks like a regular M16/AR15 to me
