for instance "12 days later..." or should it be written out. This is for a formal paper

If a number is the first word in a sentence, spell it out.

There are lots of other rules for using numbers in formal writing including rules on how to write them. The "Chicago Manual of Style" covers just about everything. See the link below.

If it's a formal paper, DO NOT write the numeral on ANY number. For example: "12 days later" should be " Twelve days later" Remember to use spell check, and a day or two before you turn it in, read over it and see if it sounds right before you get a bunch of points taken off. when writing a formal paper you are supposed to spell letters out. 1-One 2-Two ect ect

if using numbers at the beginning of a sentence, ALWAYS write them out

i think it is best to write out and also i think its ok to keep the same. but for safe keeping try to write it out.
