I began an oil painting the other day and have now found out that I am moving 18 hours away in less than two weeks. Could someone please give me some suggestions on how I can safely transport this (it isn't huge, just 16x20.) I planned to hand carry it but after an 18 hour ride in the car with my Rottwieler Xander, I'm worried my painting will end up a smeared, hairy mess.

Your painting will be dry by then.

if the painting is stretched on wooden stretcher take some thin wood...cutdown yard sticks would work...and nail them to the sides of the canvas all the way around so that they stick up past the painting at least an inch now cut a piece of anything that is fairly rigid that will fit on top of these raised sides something like two sheets of heavy cardboard or a piece of masonite duct tape that on top all the way around to seal it and keep it as safe as you can on the trip even if it gets hit a bit you should still arrive with it intact good luck on your future painting if you have a bit of time set it in full sun and it will skin over quicker before you do the above packing trick to it

Art stores sell special tacks that have a sharp tack on each end so you can transport a wet painting. You put the tacks in and then put a cover on it or a blank canvas the same size.

i sometimes use japan dryer (i don't know the origin of the name) and mix it with the linseed oil. it speeds up drying time but the painting may end up less glossy (near matte). try looking for it at the hardware store.
