I allow my 15 year old to have in his room...but it is with the understanding that he has no privacy from me with it. I've installed K9 web protection that barks if he tries to access a site that has any questionable content. I also read his e-mail (he's not aware of this, but again, he agreed to no privacy and I don't apologize for doing this)
I do periodic "chat checks" when he's online with his friends. That means when I enter the room his hands go off the keyboard and I can read what they are saying at anytime. MAJOR POS at all times!
The final and most effective safeguard we have is a lock box my husband made especially for the router. When we are not home, we disconnect it and lock it up. That way there is no unauthorized visits that could potentially be covered up.
He's a good trustworthy kid, otherwise I wouldn't even consider it. I just do all the things I do to keep him from being tempted into satisfying that curiosity all boys have.

I didn't get on the internet until i was 18. I think a computer should be kept in the family room so it can be monitored.
On aol you have to have a credit card now to get on the chat rooms on there. You have to be 18 or older.
The internet can be very helpful but kids tend to give out personal info over the net.
If you trust your child not be one of those one kids that end up talking to someone over the internet and trying to meet them then let them have the net in their bedroom.
But what age do i think? 18

I wouldn't ever allow that. Not that I'm against kids using the internet, but I think it encourages teenagers and tweens to isolate themselves. My parents never allowed me to have a tv in my room. Not that we all shared one tv (we had about 5 tvs in the house), but its just too easy for kids to sit up in their rooms and shut the door, and basically shut their parents out of their lives.
I would defintely allow my children to use the internet by themselves by like 11 or 12. I'm hoping that they will have enough discipline to know what they should and should not be doing with the computer, but I wouldn't put it in their room. They don't need their own computer at that age. I'll give them their own computer when they go to college, and they can mess their own computer up with all the viruses and cooking from porno sites.

Sorry but never. We have a family computer and that is good enough. The internet it too filled with all sorts of junk. No need for a child to have unsupervised access to it all of the time. Even if they are a teenager.

Never. Always have your family computer (your children do not need one of their own) in a public place (living room, kitchen, family room) Your children shouldn't be doing anything on line that they need to hide from you. This is a way to help keep them safe. You wouldn't let them bring home strangers, go into their bedroom and lock the door, would you?

I say never. Smart kids may find a way to circumvent this anyway but no reason to encourage it. I had internet privacy starting at age 13 and the internet exposes young people to all sorts of inappropriate people and things. It's not a dignified loss of innocence.

I would suggest NEVER! I have heard of too many stories of online Predators you need to have the computer in an open area so that there won't be as much temptation or curiosity by your child. The chances of you walking by while their on or checking up on them would keep them less likely to be victims of on line sex offenders and such. Why chance it! It isn't worth it, why would they need internet in their room anyway? We have to look out for our children. Good luck.

never! Yesterday my son who is 8 was on the net and he types in "Butt" to be funny and a band or something came up. I would of hated him to type in sexy (his favourite word at the moment) and get through to a porn site. I always watch my kids.

This depends on the individual - some younger folk deserve the priviledge sooner, some later!

I agree with never. The Internet is really a great tool but there are too many predators out there to allow your child to be surfing the web with out supervision. And really why does your child need the Internet in his/her room? it is not necessary

Any age really, there are so many things out there that will protect your kids while on line. I am thinking that one of them is called internet Nanny. It controlls what they can get into so that they can't find something they didn't intend too. But I would get the passwords to all emails and messangers and check history to be on the safe side. That is what I am going to do with my daughter.
