Christmas is hot, temperature wise, where we live, and we are having 17 people over. We will spend most of the day on our bland undecorated pergola. Any way of making it look Christmasy and inviting greatly appreciated!

I agree with everyone else, you need tonnes of lights and a Christmas tree outside. Just make sure you don't leave the Christmas tree outside for longer than a day or two or you will have spiders and bugs galore making a home in it. Silly little things can't tell fake from real!

I'm in Gold Coast Australia so our idea of Christmas lunch is cold meats, cold prawns, salads, ice creams and generally anything that doesn't need to heat up the kitchen on the day. One of the best desserts for hot Xmas day is layers of pink cake and minty green icecream and red and green jelly (kind of like a trifle with icecream instead of custard)

Cover the table with a red table cloth and set each place with green napkins and put a small tree in the middle of the table with a couple of gold or silver decos on it - just keep to one colour decos. Put thick red wire rimmed ribbon (you can get this from any department store) in huge bows on the back of each chair and tie bells on everything that moves - even the dog!

Wrap some tiny boxes filled with lollies in green paper with red ribbons and use them as place cards. Tie a fork, spoon and knife together with more ribbon and place at sides of plates. Put a tiny drop of red or green food colouring in the bottom of each glass so when someone pours their lemonade or water it turns a colour.

Make chocolate crackles (recipe on the side of copha packet) and fill cones of paper rather than patty pans, open up the cones and turn them upside down and use melted choc to glue a candy star on top of each - they look like Christmas trees.

If you have the budget buy some muslin curtains and hang them as walls around your pergola, decorate them with silver stars. These will help keep it cool inside your pergola and make everyone feel a little luxurious.

Why not buy traditional lights and decorations? Just because you're where it's hot doesn't mean you can't decorate for Christmas as if you were in cooler climes. I'm not a fan of those Christmasy pink flamingoes and the like...but heck, if it floats your boat, go for it.

I'd wrap strings of lights around green, pine-like garland and swag it all around. How about some nice Magnolia bloom and leaf swags or wreaths?

Put up a Christmas tree, decorate the area around your pergola with lights and some leafy garland. Then sprinkle the leafy garland with fake snow. Sprinkle fake snow on the floor. Make a snowman out of Styrofoam.

First get a tree and decorate. Get a few little trees and decorate and put them aroung the outer side of the patio. Then get tinsel and garland and string it around the area and make it sag some in the middle. Dress in the colors of xmas can help make things festive also. tablecloths and plates with designs of xmas. Red a green doilies around everywhere. Christmas music. Ice in coolers and in bowls everywhere to help a bit with the heat. get a fan and put a bucket of ice in front of it to help with heat. Enjoy.

hmmm... those golden leaves, you can buy packs of them, here where it's hot at xmas ;-). A few pine cones... Golden candles... dark green napkins... snow in a spray. Do not overload the pergola. Just a nice, light, classy one. I reckon...

as long as the cheer abounds, the decor is second in attraction......a warm, inviting atmosphere is the absolute place to want to be!
