I don't feel that color has anything to do with it.
If you are well presented that's what counts.
And Your there to experience in the joy of the baptism.
Not a fashion parade.

My personal opinion is as long as it is in good taste and you feel comfortable it's fine. Today people aren't so inclined to stick to the old ways of dressing. now if it were summer I think I would not wear black. Maybe a nice colorful scarf or ligh jewelry would make it pop and not look like a funeral. If it were me I would just ask. After all it's their occasion and they may want pictures and they may want something else, so don't feel bad and ask so you will be even more comfortable. you could always wear a different color jacket or shawl or a sweater with the black dress too. Enjoy and congratulations on the honor.

It depends on your culture. In Catholic churches in Europe and Asia I know it would be considered not just inappropriate but highly offensive. This is because in these cultures black is a symbol of mourning - it is worn at funerals.

White is generally regarded as purity (hence virginal brides dress in white at weddings) and newlife hance babies wrapped in white during baptism.

I know in America advertising now seems to influence tastes more than cultural heritage in some communities. My brother recently married a 3rd generation Czech-American. Although catholic she had no idea that black was inappropriate for a wedding and followed a fashion magazine that showed film stars marrying in black. When we advised her it was not a good idea for her wedding she cried and emotionally blackmailed us.

Now the bridesmaid (her best mate from Ohio) and my parents can't show the wedding pictures to their friends and family as everyone comments why are we wearing black - a bad omen/ insult at weddings.

So you need to consider who may look at the baptism photos and how things may be viewed during the baptism, by a wider audience! Check with the priest and family if in doubt what they consider is accetable.

If you have something else to wear, I'd go with that instead. Black does not seem appropriate at all for a baptism.

Of course, as another answerer noted, it's what happens inside that counts -- but what we do on the outside matters also.

I just attended a baptism as a godmother.. and I wore all black with a pearl bracelet. I looked very elegant and I noticed others were wearing black as well. Like someone said above and I thumbs-uped him... it doesnt matter what you wear... only whats in your heart.. wwjd.

well baptism is just a tradition... an event where the outward motion of baptism represents the inner and personal acceptance of Jesus Christ. Why should clothes matter... Your clothes don't show your heart. You love her enough to show up, that's enough.
