people, if you're dog is NOT registered and is NOT a PUREBRED than DON'T breed them!!!! spay/neuter ASAP!!! also, if you DON'T have a clue about breeding than you DON'T need to. whether you have a purebred or not. I have a 10 yr. old Purebred beagle with papers and is registered with the AKC but I choose to neuter him because I had no clue about dog breeding and I didn't want the responsibility. why can't people be more like me? there are WAY too many homeless pups/dogs in this world for all you BYB's to be producing more. PLEASE take my advice.

*steps up to soapbox* I agree people should spay and neuter their animals - pure bred or mutt if they are not registered breeders the animals should not be reproducing.

So many questions here about "how did my dog get pregnant" or "she's still panting after having 3 pups what do I do". I don't understand. Are these the same people who didn't know that THEY were pregnant until the 9th hour? How does that work?

To add to your rant, why are people so adverse to taking their animal to the vet? It's $40 for an office visit where I live (Los Angeles) - and it's well worth my piece of mind when I take my dog and the vet tells me not to worry (thought she pulled a spay staple) or just to keep an eye on things (she had a fatty lump on her side).

I understand people asking questions about breed specifics and how to assimilate a new dog into their home -- tips on crate training, things like that - but all these breeding questions are so sad - what happens when the dog needs a c-section at the last minute or dies because the owner was ignorant.

Nobody knows everything, but that's what vets are for. I believe an excuse posted here was that they need some 'coaching', no you need EDUCATION and you need A VET!

Being a responsible pet owner means controlling the pet population. Bob Barker's been touting that mantra for years. When you adopt a pet from a shelter of the ASPCA, they REQUIRE you have the pet spayed or neutered. If you license your dog, there's a REASON the fees are 10x more expensive if your dog is intact.

There's just no reason to increase the pet pupulation. Spay or neuter your animals.

They all make the same point!! "All breeders were clueless at one time!" The difference is we KNEW we were clueless and didn't start breeding UNTIL we knew what was right and what was wrong!!!!!! You are not going to gain knowledge on breeding good quality dogs by getting your education HERE!!!!
I NEVER produced a BYB litter because I knew that was wrong. I didn't know all of what to do to do it right, SO I LEARNED!!!!!!!!
WHAT A CONCEPT!!! LEARNING!!!! Why is that such a foreign concept to so many????? There is so much information out there for the taking!!!! USE IT!!!!!! GOD!! How simple can it get!!!!!!!!!!

a dog need not be a mutt, for the owners to be a backyad breeder.,
MANY MANY AKC and CKC registered dogs are part of the "designer dog" fad that is going around, you know, breed anything to a poodle and give is some sickeningly cute doodle or poo name and sell it for hundreds..But, ITS STILL A MUTT.... Its all nuts. Look at Jack russels, all the fad a few years ago and now people cant give them way....

i haven't had the prospect yet, if i did i does not breed any horses. the rationalization why is with the aid of the fact, there is way too could horses available that are poorly cared for. I own 3 horses 2 mares & a gelding. All 3 have been poorly cared for in until i bought them. We bought my horse as a colt he exchange into ungelded & so we've been given him gelded. Then some weeks later we bought our mares from a similar individual we've been given my gelding. Come to confirm my sisters mare exchange into bred to my gelding earlier we bought him(yet of direction we weren't informed she exchange into in foal in until as quickly as we bought her.) She is a 20 300 and sixty 5 days old 14hh racking pony she has no papers & was a instruct pony or so we've been informed. She exchange into bred to my 3 300 and sixty 5 days old14.2hh horse he's a Tennessee walker/Paint circulate. She is in large well-being yet she drags her lower back leg. ( the sole reason we bought her is with the aid of the fact we felt undesirable for her & they fantastically plenty gave her to us as quickly as we bought my mare). My mum and dad exchange into definitely going to purchase her for me a pair years in the past from a distinctive individual & she had stable conformation yet after the guy that bred her she went down hill from there & her conformation sucks simply by fact she is is a 500 pound pony that modify into ridden on trails for miles & miles by utilising a guy that weights very just about 3 hundred pounds no comedian tale his ft drug the floor while he rode her. She has a extraordinary character & is quite clever & my horse that she exchange into bred to has ok conformation & an incredible attitude however the foal heavily isn't a champion it is going to easily be a mutt. The foal is due the tip of this month & we are conserving her & the foal they could have a perment living house. yet subsequently i wouldnt breed a horse if i had 2 champs with large bloodlines.

I am a supposeably backyard breeder I guess as I breed AKC Shelties with champion lines.I dont have a kennel and all my dogs live in my house and have their puppies inside with me , my husband and another friend in attendance who also raises dogs..My dogs are all kept current on all shots and vet visits and checked while they are pregnant. They are fed puppy food while pg and all are given vitamins all time.My vet is called when they are gettint close to make sure she will be available and if not recommend another and then I talk to them but so far that has not happened. When my dog goes into labor I call my vet and let her know in case something happens and I need to take her in and that has never happened thank goodness. We never have an unattened birth and we help if necessary and keep our Moms calm. After the pups are born one of us is awake around the clock for at least 3 days to make sure they are all doing ok.They are all taken in for a vet check after they are born, and to make sure mom is ok too.Yes I was very inexperienced when I started but I studied And picked everyones brain that I could.Even yet when labor starts I have my books out and my birthing notes and read and reread while we are waiting.Im not in it for the money believe me and sell most of my puppies with a spay and neuter contract and I do not sell to kennels and have to really talk to the people before I will sell to them.I have been known to give pups to disabled or some special needs but only if they can afford to take care and keep all shots, heartworm, flea and tick meds up..I dont let my pups go untill after they have had their 2nd shot, and I start worming at 2 wks and continue every 2 wks .My babies are all vet checked before they are sold and are given a health guarantee.I can give refrences also.Im always available after the puppies go to their forever home if they need me or I can help in any way.i always call back to check to see how they are doing because I do care and love everyone of my babies. They are very social.and loving babies.SO you see all so called breeders are not bad but some give all of us a bad name.I also have an acre yard that is fenced so my dogs have plenty of room to run and play and my house is kept very clean even though my dogs live in our home. We do love our dogs a lot.

It's many reasons I think. Some do it for the money, some do it because their dog is awesome and they want to make more just like it so everyone can enjoy a dog just like theirs, some do it "on accident", over and over and over again...and some do it because they think they're going to start a breeding business. There're probably more motives behind it, but either way, I agree it's wrong.

Leave it to the pro's!

I agree! Anyone who doesn't know about breeding shouldn't be doing it. There are so many risks involved and so much knowledge needed before attempting this!

Its all about money and it is not limited to dogs. I was at a park recently and a woman was selling rabbits. Another gentleman asked her if they were for pets or eating. The ladies reply "I do not care what they do with them after they are sold". I am not an animal rights activist, I eat meat. However, that day, I wanted to be arrested for assault and battery.

Yes! Exactly, except you shouldn't breed dogs unless they have achieved a Ch. status (through the AKC or other kennel club), I cringe everytime I see a "I BREED MI DOGGIEH!!!!!111" post...
