In my report I need to define the purpose of the project as well as the scope of the project. What sort of information are they looking in each of these fields? This is for a manufacturing environment.

PURPOSE describes the reason for the project. Sometimes purpose and objective are used interchangeably for this one.

SCOPE describes the breadth of the subject your writing about. Another way to think about it is the boundaries for the project. (e.g. "is this in the scope of the project you are working on?"

As your question relates to a manufacturing environment, you could think of PURPOSE as addressing the question of "what problem you are trying to solve", while SCOPE would answer, "what is the range of options available to be considered for solving it".

One time I was trying to be a good Samaritan by asking a question so I could give Ompelley a best answer, and I got a VN, for insulting other participants. It was kind of bittersweet, because thats the first time I had ever gotten a VN for that reason!

The names speak for themselves,
Purpose-why are you doing it.
Scope-how are you doing it.
