about a year ago i was diagnosed with graves disease, which is a thyroid disease, and i was treated for it about 6 months ago by having my thyroid killed off with a radioactive iodine pill, and now i've been taking thyroid hormone replacement medication for about 6 months now. i was wondering what kind of effect thyroid diseases have on your weight. in about 2 years, i've gained 20 lbs (my lifestyle and diet have changed slightly, but not much), and i've been dieting and exersicing for 5 months now, but have only managed to lose 10 lbs. i lost that 10 lbs in the first 3 months, and since then, i havent lost any weight. i was wondering if this was due in part to my thyroid disease. please let me know what you think!!! i need some advice about trying to loose weight while still having a thyroid (metabolism) disease.

Technically, you don't have a thyroid disease as you don't have a thyroid anymore. I have had Graves for over seven years and am now in remission. I lost 40 lbs when it started before I went to see a MD; I learned my lesson. It is now a matter of regulating your hormone medication to regulate your weight and not a Walmart pill. I am surprised that your MD decided to destroy your thyroid instead of trying Tapazole to get it under control. You are going to gain weight as you are in a permanent "hypo" state.

Hi ... I'm sorry, but I got annoyed at the previous poster who said you will gain weight being hypo. No, that is not true. People only gain weight when their calorie intakes exceed their calorie expenditures.
I am hypo. I developed it about 5 years ago and had a devil of a time getting to the right dosage. Once I was there, there have been very subtle modifications. Yes, I gained weight -- however, it was not simple cause and effect, laying the blame on the hypo. I was drinking a lot of soda, eating 1 meal a day (a big one loaded with fat at that), incredibly stressed out, and not exercising. Now here's the secret ... 6 weeks ago I started to watch what I ate, since I had never (I had Graves too) had to watch my weight. I counted sodas, added calories, and read books. I was doing EVERYTHING wrong. Just six weeks ago I started eating sensibly and have not begun to exercise (a lot of stress still - too much to do). With just careful eating, I've lost 8 pounds. Not bad, huh? I drink 5 sodas a week, so not even 1 a day. I drink a lot of water and unsweetened tea. I eat 3 meals a day, sensible sized meals. I watch fat content but not too much. No more french fries and other fried food, except for the occasional splurge. (I've never indulged in desert so don't have to worry about that.) I aim for the healthy choices now ... and 8 pounds is great for just 6 weeks. And I'm not even on a diet, just a lifestyle choice ... the exercising shall begin next month, so I imagine I'll get back to my prior weight (105) ratehr quickly (113 now).
You can do it. Please don't blame the thyroid, it'll make you feel helpless to control the weight. Just deal with the fact that you are the one controlling the weight gain pieces and you can attack the problem. Good luck!!

oh, you have done the RAI? that possibly lead to hypothyroidism cause its theory is to destruct the thyroid gland to further release thyroid hormones, that may cause a damage on the gland itself. therefore you needa in-take thyroid hormone replacement drugs forever from now mostlikely. Getting weight & hardly lose weight is kind of symptoms of hypothyroidism too.
Perhaps, you can visit www.health-guard.net/eng/thyroid_symptoms.php to check them (o, i rmb he is called Mr. Yu) if can assist you anything.. i went there with my closed friend once, they are very helpful to thyroid patients! they got a thyroid remedy called health-guard t18 , that is natural chi.capsules.
