Which Plane was Faster? A Japanese Zero Or the P-51 Mustang?

The P-51 Mustang was faster than the Japanese Zero, however the Zero was much more maneuverable. So though on a level race the Mustang could win hands down they had trouble keeping up because of their lack of ability to maneuver the plane in the same manner.

Point of order to the first poster. The Zero was a great fighter & was fast but at a cost. They used a different design philosophy. Clean, lightweight, long ranged & agile. It Used those atributes in the attack first idea. Much like a Samurai sword vs a heavy Saber. Both work, but one requires finese. That was the Zeros strong point.

Yes the p-51 was faster. Devlopment of newer faster engines did not keep pacce with the allies. By the time the P-151 saw service in the Pacific, Japan was short on quality pilots, fuel, and everything else.

The only reason the Japanese had any success with Zeros is they invented the tactics to use them and the west took a while to catch up. The zero was slow, underpowered, unarmored and lightly armed. It maneuverability was overcome by our guys learning to fly fast at higher altitudes.

Sorry chill pill, it wasn't "American horsepower." The P-51 was considered a failure until they mated it up with a fantastic engine made by Rolls Royce.
