My engagement ring is a 1 carat cushion cut diamond with a cathedral, 4 prong platinum setting.
I agree, the 4 prong shows off the diamond better (allows more light into the diamond so it sparkles better!). When my husband was ring shopping, he did a lot of research, and didn't find any reason that a 4 prong setting was any more likely to lose the stone.
Make sure you get your ring checked out by a reputable jeweler once or twice a year - if your setting gets a little loose, it's better to find out about it while the diamond is still in the ring!!
Also make sure your engagement ring is covered by your homeowners or renters insurance policy in case something does happen to either the ring or the diamond.

I saw a very cool thing at the jewelers the other day. I hope I can adequately describe it to you.
There were prongs around the solitaire round stone.
The unique thing was that there appeared to be four prongs but, in actuality, each prong had two prongs holding the stone. One held on one side of the diamond, and the other prong held the other side.Ask your jeweler about this.
In total there were actually eight prongs - four split prongs. I am with you. I don't like six prongs but if the four prongs on your ring are big enough, they should hold the stone in place.

6 prong is better because it is much safer. If you really like 4 prong that much better than 6, just make sure to get your prongs checked by a reputable jeweler (preferably where you bought the ring) often to make sure the stone isn't loose. Also, do make sure to insure the ring, but keep in mind that it is the ENTIRE ring that is insured, not just the diamond... meaning that you have to lose the entire ring, setting and all, to get any insurance money.

ask your jeweler about the safety of four vs. six prongs. I have a four prong, and while the ring is white gold, the prongs are made of platinum for added strength and safety.
whatever you choose, be sure you add a rider to your insurance policy to cover the unthinkable. it doesn't cost much, and it really provides peace of mind. (my good friend looked down one day to realize her prong had broken, and her diamond was gone. she had no insurance, and it was many years before they had the money to spend for another ring!) :o(

It is better to have 6 prongs because you can never be too safe. It might look better in 4, but depending ont he style, 6 can look great too...

i think for me its better to have a solitaire diamond round ring, solo stone, its very meanigful, why? solo stone means YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE I LOVE. AND SOLO STONE IS MORE ATTRACTIVE AND EASILY RECOGNIZABLE.
