(Matthew 2:1-9,16) After Jesus had been born in Beth´le·hem of Ju·de´a in the days of Herod the king, look! astrologers from eastern parts came to Jerusalem, 2 saying: “Where is the one born king of the Jews? For we saw his star [when we were] in the east, and we have come to do him obeisance.” 3 At hearing this King Herod was agitated, and all Jerusalem along with him; 4 and on gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people he began to inquire of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They said to him: “In Beth´le·hem of Ju·de´a; for this is how it has been written through the prophet, 6 ‘And you, O Beth´le·hem of the land of Judah, are by no means the most insignificant [city] among the governors of Judah; for out of you will come forth a governing one, who will shepherd my people, Israel.’” 7 Then Herod secretly summoned the astrologers and carefully ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearing; 8 and, when sending them to Beth´le·hem, he said: “Go make a careful search for the young child, and when YOU have found it report back to me, that I too may go and do it obeisance.” 9 When they had heard the king, they went their way; and, look! the star they had seen [when they were] in the east went ahead of them, until it came to a stop above where the young child was. .......................16 Then Herod, seeing he had been outwitted by the astrologers, fell into a great rage, and he sent out and had all the boys in Beth´le·hem and in all its districts done away with, from two years of age and under, according to the time that he had carefully ascertained from the astrologers.

Ok to anwser your question why They were lead to Herod, you have to read everything in between you left out it was to fullfill prophesy.
Mt 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
Mt 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Mt 2:12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
Mt 2:13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
Mt 2:14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
Mt 2:15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
And you can keep reading on and find even more prophesies in that chapter that are fullfilled.
Jesus had to come from Egypt so he had to flea Herod order to kill the two year olds and younger. Its kind of funny they can serch for the scriptures to find out where he was born but can't see where he will come from.
And just to say they were not astrologers. They were Magi. Astrologers aren't right. The Magi were wise men from the lost tribes of Isreal.

Bethlehem is about 15 km (9 miles) from Jerusalem. After travelling for 2 years, they got pretty close, but then went to the capital and the palace to look for the "King of Kings" ....
Verse 9 shows they had lost sight of the star before entering Jerusalem. They followed their political assumptions to get to Herod. - Bad move

They knew that the star was leading them to the one born King of the Jews and so they naturally went to the capital of Jerusalem thinking that the King would be there. It would appear that they went off course because when they left they were glad to see the star "again" like maybe they had lost track of it by following their own wisdom instead of being faithful to follow the path God was trying to lead them on.
"After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they HAD seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. Matthew 2:9-10

Perhaps God was presenting Herod with the opportunity to become a believer in Jesus.
Unfortunately, Herod rejected God's kindness, and instead engaged in an act of wicked brutality. But that's Herod's fault, not God's.

The star was actually put there by Satan as an attempt to kill the young Jesus, God himself would not have brought people, who he tells his people Israel to stay away from, to his Son, and He, God, would certainly not have led them to Herod who wanted to kill Jesus, in Luke, God has His angels appear before shepherds of his people in the fields attending their flocks to tell of Jesus' coming. And the fact that Jehovah warned the astrologers in a dream not to return to Herod should also tell you that he did not bring them to His Son. And Jehovah would never have done anything that would have resulted in the slaughter of innocent children. Why do people believe there were three persons?, it doesn't say how many persons, just three gifts, frankincense, gold, and myrrh, just more than two.

Ummmm....where does it say that? Read the text again. It says they (the Magi) came to Jerusalem. Herod then "summoned the astrologers (Magi)"...thereby....Herod intercepted them....the star did not lead them "to King Herod".

I think they were surprized that all of "Jewery" were not at the house on their faces. They knew the prophecy, yet Herod ,being the maniac that he was ,I'm sure ,would kill anyone who did. That's why the angel then warned them.
