Once it was believed that a once a day feeding was okay for adult dogs. Now we know better. We have learned that most dogs are happier and less stressed if fed two or three times a day. To feed 2 meals per day, take the amount of food you were going to give the dog once a day, divide it in half, and there are your two meals. If you aren't sure how much to feed, you can read the feeding suggestions on the packaging. Remember that this is a guideline only, and that some dogs will need more or less than the suggested amount. So, if your dog is thin or loses too much weight, feed more. If the dog is overweight or begins to get fat, feed him less. For 3 meals a day, just divide the total amount you were going to give the dog in one meal by 3 and adjust it up or down as explained in the paragraph above. Many Toy breeds are fed three times a day because their metabolisms are so high. You may find that this works best for your 5 lb. dog. Toy breeds tend to get low blood sugar and need the extra (third) meal. I would recommend 3 meals a day for your dog.

Guessing that your dog is 60-80 pounds your dog should be fed 2 1/2 to 3 cups of dog food a day. (depending on how active your dog is). it really doesnt matter once or twice a day, the main thing is (2 1/2 to 3 cups)
basic feeding tips:
Feed your puppy the same kind of food every day. Unlike humans, a dog's digestive system cannot handle changes in food. It can cause upset stomach and diarrhea.
When switching to a new food, gradually transition him to the new food by mixing portions of both foods until you slowly phase the old food out. Your puppy may experience diarrhea if his food is suddenly changed.
Feed your puppy at the same time every day.
Always have fresh drinking water available.
Keep food and water bowls clean.
Don't overfeed your puppy.
Monitor your puppy's weight and activity level, and make feeding adjustments as necessary.
Don't be alarmed if your puppy's appetite changes. It is normal for your puppy to lose his appetite or experience digestive upset occasionally. If your puppy's upset stomach becomes severe or last longer than a day or two, contact your veterinarian.
If you are mixing water to dry food you should mix 4 parts dry food to 1 part water.
good luck!

It depends on the size of dog. Large dogs like German Shepherds and greyhounds should be fed 2 small meals twice a day to avoid bloat.
For small dogs it's ok to feed them once a day but I think it is a lot nicer to feed them twice a day because they might get hungry. I feed my mini greyhound twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.

I think twice. When we kept dogs they were fed twice a day--we ever had a labrador, a dalmation and also a mini bull terrier. The size of the meals shopuld depend on the size of the dog. You could also monitor the dog's weight--if its getting fat, its eating too much; if its getting thin, it isn't eating enough.

would you prefer to eat once a day or twice?
thought so. If you feed once the dog will be hungry and eat too fast and possibly get sick. I would recommend breaking it up into 2 meals that way your god wont feel like it has to binge eat because its next meal is so far away

It is a matter of preference as you can read from the many different answers. Although I do agree with an earlier post about feeding twice a day to prevent bloat.(large breeds or those with deep chest)

I prefer to feed my dog twice a day to prevent a disease called bloat (gastric dilatation-volulus). When they eat their food too fast they can take in alot of air and cause their stomach to fill up and twist causing a VERY life threatening condition. This normally affects deep chested or large breeds and since I have a basset hound I have concern for it. Might depend on the breed of your dog.

I have three dogs in my house at the moment and I leave dry food in their dishes all the time. They never seem to want to eat at the same time. In the 20 years that I've had dogs none has become overweight by feeding this way.
