Research the breed that would be best for you. Do not get a dog based on how it looks. All breeds are not suited for all people and lifestyles.
Both are nice looking breeds but very different.
Prices vary on breeds it depends on where you live and who you buy from.

I prefer the look and characteristics of the Border Collies myself.

EDIT>>

The cost would depend on where you get teh dog from. A breeder obviously will cost more then a rescue organization. I also find that most rescue organizations cost a little more then shelters.

You can find purebreds in foster homes (rescues) and in shelters. You just have to search petfinder.com or go to your local shelter and put the word out.

You could also put an ad in your local paper, on the bulletin boards at the grocery store or post office letting people know that you're interested in a Golden or Border Collie. Don't mention a price and see who calls. you never know, someone could be on the verge of being taken to a shelter just a few minutes down the road from you.

Good luck whatever your decision.

I think both are very beautiful, but if I had to choose...I'd go with the Border Collie. I think the collie is a more intelligent and loyal dog. But if not any of these, then its the german shepherd all the way.

To go along with what John S said. Border Collies really do look out for kids. My mix looks out for me and my sister. She actually barks at my bus driver, even at some of my friends and neighbors when they come too close to the house or me.

Border collies are known to be very intelligent dogs. Golden retrievers have the reputation of being rather stupid dogs and hyper. I'd go for the border collie.

They're both equally matched in the looks dept.

But from what I've heard, boarder collies are true bred "working dogs". It's in their blood. They not only want to herd things, they NEED to. It's not like a habbit or behavior that can be broken. In general, they really shouldn't be kept as pets, I'm afraid. And because of this deeply bred behavior they're probably not the best choice for being around small children.

That said, I'm sure there are many Yahoo members who own boarder collies which are well-adjusted and loved members of the family. Remember, I said "in general". There are exceptions to every rule and I hope they and their dogs enjoy many happy years to come.

I loved border collies, but I don't have the kind of house and yard that a dog would need to be happy. I've heard border collies have to be "worked" for hours every day to burn off their energy and so that they will be happy. Not sure I have the lifestyle for that .

Golden retrievers are great dogs. They are some of the smartest dogs out there. Very loyal, playful but not over hyper and great with kids. Ive had 3 golden retrievers.

If you have small kids get the Border Collie. Collies seem to be a little better with kids.

Red and white border collies are beautiful dogs. I love border collies. The only golden retrivers I know are mean guard dogs but they are pretty as well, espically the blonde ones.
