there is a muscle that tightens on the ear drum, effectively reducing the transmission of sound waves intensity to the nerve endings. Its a protective reflex.

I suspect (if your choices are correctly reported) the first answer is open the mouth(?) Opening the mouth can stretch the salpingopharyngious muscle and pull on the canal to the middle ear. Kind of how a yawn can pop your ears on a plane flight.
