They record events, people and lifestyles from a visual perpective. They embellish these pictures with wordssometimes, but the pictures should tell the real story. Watching a child running down a road from a burning Vietnamese village, naked with napalm burns tells a stronger story than mere words.
Photojournalism shows the harsh reality hidden behind dispassionate words. It brings the horror, reality, suffering home.

I'm glad to hear that you are interested in this subject. Good luck with the class.
Photojournalists tell their stories through a series of photographs. This would also include supporting words. This is where a lot of people loose interest. Yes you do have to collect information and organize it into some logical form. Some think that all there is to the job is pushing the shutter release and collecting a check. You must understand what the situation is and how it plays into the lives of the subjects and those viewing the piece. Photography is a very powerful medium...some would say it's loosing its appeal.....but it has the ability to capture moments in time a freezing them forever. I still remember the very first photo I ever watched appear in a tray of developer.....over 30 years ago. Since that time i have had the pleasure of meeting tens of thousands of individuals who each had a story to tell. I enjoy traveling to different places and seeing things for the first time. I like the process of progressive understanding.....know nothing going in.....know a whole lot going out. If I learn one new thing each day I consider it time well spent. As a photojournalist you have the ethical responsibility to create images that reflect the situation with a high degree of accuracy. Photoshop seems to have tested the honesty of some of my fellow photographers. Creating a visual lie is selling you and your subject down the ethical river....and with the Internet you will be found out. Just because you are shooting in Iraq and want to show more smoke and flames with the help of photo software the guy competing against you shoulder to should won't have the same image......his boss will ask why...and when he tells the story you will end up on the black list of photographers.
Sorry to go on but photojournalism is a passion of mine and I want young photographers to understand the job.
