because the sneeze is so powerful we would blow our eye balls out of the sockets.....thats the old belief but their are other newer reasons and it is that its a natural reaction our body does, and it is signalled by our brain. its like when you burn your hand you quickly pull it away near to you, its the same kind of thing, but if you practised then you would be able to eventually keep your eyes open while sneezing.......the human body is weird.

Actually, no one really knows.
''It is unclear, but scientists theorize that we close our eyes to protect them. We may be protecting our eyes from microorganisms and particles from our sneezes," said Dr. Bonnie Henderson, director of comprehensive ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. But it could also be simply because a sneeze is a kind of bodywide reflex in which a lot of muscles contract, not just in the nose and throat but also those in the diaphragm, the abdomen, thighs, back, even sphincters (which is why some people with stress incontinence may urinate slightly when they sneeze).

Because, believe it or not ( I heard this in an anatomy class ) the internal compression force generated by the body is such your eyes would pop out. Literally. Same with a hard laugh. I'm wondering how true this is, I can understand some nerve or anchoring muscle damage; but then again, how easy is it to lose an eye. It didn't take much to take out Sammy Davis Jr.'s eye. That was essentially whiplash.

Great question!! I want to know the same thing!
I'm not really sure but I think it's because when you sneeze, your heart stops for a split second, and that probably triggers a reaction to the nerves in your eyes.

Because the speed at which you sneeze is so fast that you close your eyes automatically.

the ear nose and eyes are all connected
in order to build up pressure to force particles out of our nose, something has to shut - otherwise particles could be forced out of the eyes (not cool).
this is in the same way as you swallow on a plane to relieve ear pressure

It all depends what are you doing at the unpredictable time. Try doing it while you are driving and see if you can.
