I actually just handed in a paper on this

Her governemtn and people of government have evolved from a patriarchal religion..... Islam and christanity both encourgae and support the women as being porperty to men. Females are property of their fathers until they are transfered into marriage. where they then become the property of the husband.
Women are considred second class citizens and it takes 2-3 women to equal the word of one man.

North america evolved from this society but only in the past 50 years. until then it was the right of a husband to beat his wife.
it wasnt until 1993 that 48 states had outlawed maritail rape.

Women have been oppressed for many years any most countries. Its only recently in our parents/grandparents generation that things have changed... It will take more time for all women to enjoy the same freedoms we do here.

Some Men in the Islamic World (and it doesn't necessarily make what they do Islamic nor echo Islam) seem to like to play the game King of the Hill and they like to see how many people they can oppress.

It's like being a school yard bully.

Islam is an ultra-orthodox religion and once upon a time Judaism and Christianity were about the same with women.

Paul said Women are Not To Speak in the Church

That's 1 Corinthians, sounds rather oppressive, doesn't it.

Women have NO say, no VOICE.

Most Jews and Chrsitians have put that aside, however Catholics still don't hve women Priests.

What I have never understood is why Women in the U.S. gave up on the ERA. What, just to avoid the draft and draft registration!

Boy, sure doesn't take much to scare women off, does it!

So, given the first answer here by a Muslim woman and the lack of support in the USA for the ERA, the obvious answer is WOMEN SEEM TO LIKE BE OPPRESSED to a degree at least.

I was a heavy advocate in Show Biz of getting rid of Best Actress in the Oscars and just making it Actor, non gender. Women I knew were furious, like they're never be another woman voted in as best Actor!

OK, so maybe we need to really revamp it and start a new catagoree. Best Directress, best Produceress

Women seem to like the Spanish French Gender distinctions of LA LE, Lo El

Women allow and condone limited oppression. It's free will. Why else did they not demand the ERA be made constitutional law.

Simply put, men who follow and believe in any of the three patriarchal monotheistic religions (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity) do no recognize the Divine Feminine. If they did, I firmly believe this world would be a far better place.

They are not always oppressed, but when they are, it's because many beliefs are handed down from father to child, however old-fashioned they may be. There wouldn't be half as many Christians today if children weren't exposed to Christianity from the moment they were born and excluded from all other religions.

There religion teaches that the fall of mankind came about because it was Eve who was decieved by Satan in the Garden of Eden. And to this day, they still hold the belief that women are inferior to men because of the original sin that the woman brought about.

That's an outdated stereotype, and it's not an Islamic thing. That was due to Arab culture, which has evolved with the new generation.

I dont think they intentionally do it. Its a social "bad thing" which is result of lack of freedom to women in islam.
