yes, it is very common, especially for boys. i teach pre k and the kids drive me insane sometimes with their arranging things...the magnets on my desk will be lined up, taken off, lined up again a million times a day. they line up their fruit snacks, their pretzels, matchbox cars, crayons, wood chips on the playground. they spend more time lining up their materials rather than using them the way they should.
they are learning while they do this too. they are building their fine motor skills, counting, sorting, matching, identifying, classifying...plus a million more things.
remember, just a few months ago he wasn't able to do anything like this. life is so new for them!
if you are still concerned i would definitely talk with my pediatrician about it. never let a concern go because you think you are paranoid. it never hurts to ask a professional opinion! at least you'll be reassured your child is on target developmentally.

This is a normal thing. He's at that age where he is learning a lot. My son also does this. Not with everything, but with a lot of things, especially cars. It's not harming him. Infact, it's building his motor skills. Let him keep at it.

talk to your doctor. My daughter always lined things up and she is fine, but in some cases kids with autism do that. I am not in any way saying your child has autism, but if it worries you I would talk to your doctor

My daughter used to do it alot at that age. She still does it sometimes, but calls it a choo-choo train (lol.) Its normal, and very creative. I would get him blocks or a puzzle and see how he does with that.

It sounds like you have a little architect. Buy him some blocks, especially if they're different colors! He'll have a blast stacking and sorting them. (I teach Pre-k).

2 year olds can be quite quirky....let him enjoy his playtime....if he likes to line things up, I see no real problem in that.

Ask your pediatrician. They will recommend testing if it is not normal.
