I read a lot of questions on here about what to do with a dog when the owner no longer needs/wants it. I'm appalled by how "disposable" our canines are.

Did you know that not all animals are humanely "put to sleep" if they don't find homes? Many are drowned, gassed, shot and tortured...do you really want your dog to die such a horrible death?

Not all dogs get adopted. You think your dog is "so cute he'll find a good home?" Check out your local shelter and http://www.petfinder.com for all of the othe dogs that were surrendered whose owners thought the same thing.

Do you know that abandoning your dog on the side of the road/in the wild is a recipe for disaster? First, if it's female, she will most likely wind up pregnant, and before long you will have a pack of wild dogs causing damage, tearing up trash, terrorizing children, and even attacking other animals or pets.

Keep your pets. You owe it to them.

by the way, owner surrendered animals are often put to sleep almost immediately, not even given the chance to be adopted.

I couldn't agree more. People seem to think, it's only a dog or cat. If we dump it near a farm they will adopt it or perhaps in town close to the shelter. Having worked in a shelter, it was not unusual to find dogs tied to our fence during the night or boxes with puppies and kittens. These animals are many times abused or diseased and cannot be adopted. Many cities have regulations that certain breeds have to be euthanized when picked up. When you adopt an animal it is completely dependent on you for everything and will love you under any circumstances unconditionally. How can you possible give up or toss away someone that loves you and waits for you even when you are late. Never complains if you have bad breath or accidentally step on him. Look into those beautiful eyes and tell me a person with that kind of love.

Yeah, great post.
I know all these dangers, and everyone should.I applaud you for putting this up. It is a very important subject. I would never abandon my two babies. I made a life long commitment when I adopted them, and I don't think that people who can not make a life long commitment to their dogs should adopt or buy dogs. I think that buying dogs is disgusting! That is how they end up at shelters- breeders-ugh...
Please everyone, if you are looking for a great little puppy or dog, go to a local shelter, there are already so many dogs in need of help. I have found the two best doggies that I could ever wish for at a local humane society, and I will forever be grateful. I also want to applaud non-kill shelters! And animal rights advocates! And people who adopt and save dogs, or any other animals!

Sometimes people just have no choice but to put their pet in a shelter if they can't find someone to take it. We can't forsee the future when we get a pet. Many circumstances beyond our control may necessitate giving up the beloved pet.

Good for you for raising awareness about this issue!!! I couldn't agree more. My dog is my baby, my buddy, my best friend. I can't imagine getting rid of him. He's family - you don't throw your family memebers on the side of the road if you get tired of them.
