Dude, why did you answer your own question? Anyway, most of those sound good. I don't know if you really narrow it down to just 5 or 10 Drivers.
My Picks
Top 5 of Today:
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Jimmie Johnson
Tony Stewart
Jeff Burton
Jeff Gordon
Some that could flip-flop with those guys: Elliott Sadler, Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards
Top Up Coming:
Martin Truex Jr.
Clint Bowyer
Paul Menard
Reed Sorenson
David Stremme
Denny Hamlin

Tony Stewart for sure, The other Four I would place money on would be Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, Casey Mears ( new race car go number 25), Kurt Busch ( but not little brother kyle that whiner). The one I would love to see really get it together and kick butt is Brian Vickers especially after such a bad year with the treatment he got from Hendricks Motorsports

This question is not an answerable question. From the names you have given you have followed racing 5 or so years. Each driver mentioned is a candiate for a holl of fame or record or championship. But when you look at the field that take a green flag on raceday you see the best 43 drivers run.
We all have our favorites and we all have the ones we are not fond of.We all pick on every driver and we cheer them on to victory.
The best drivers today are not easy to pick but from the popularity stand point there are a ton.
Jeff Gordon,Tony Stewart,Are 2 of most popular drivers and are 2 of the best. But by the same token the drivers such as Kahne,Mears,Edwards are very good drivers that are learning each race. The some of the older drivers,Petty,Labinte,Jarrett, schrader are the statesmen of the racing weekend, they know that their years are slowly ending as being a competitive racer but they are still fan favorites. In the not too far off the Gordons,Stewarts,Johnsons,Kahne,Edwards will be the ones at the end of their careers and this same question will be asked by a new fan with new younger drivers the us older fans will be saying back when...................................

I certainly agree that Jimmie, Tony, Kasey and Junior are some of the best drivers of our day, while Carl is one to watch. Also, I wouldn't leave out Denny Hamlin, who is doing GREAT as a rookie and is bound to just keep getting better, and Casey Mears who can drive great if he keeps his emotions in check. I'm also going to keep my eye on Juan Pablo Montoya, I dont' know if he'll be one of the best, but he should be fun to watch.
Greg's doing alright and is always gonna be alright, but I think Jeff's star is falling and Matt's can't be too far behind. Now if the Busch brothers would just go away, I'd be happy as a clam. :)

as the "young guns" (though tony stewart, jeff gordon, greg biffle or matt kenseth can't be really considered "young guns")
gather more experience we should expect all of the ones that you have listed to be productive. don't leave out denny hamlin,
martin truex, jamie mcmurry and a few upstarts to shake things up. with the "car of tomorrow" starting to emerge it will play into the guys with the most experience and ability to communicate with the crew chief as to what is needed to make the car run faster. the next few years are going to be very interesting,
very interesting indeed.

He is hard to take sometimes, caustic, tries to be fun, and in my opinion is both funny, and has class... Kevin Harvick, or who else would you rather have to try and fill Earnhardt Sr.'s shoes in the Goodwrench Chevy if you were Childress Racing ? Tough assignment !
