It would be hard to go wrong with a mid-level camera from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fuji or Kodak. All these are primarily camera manufacturers and have been making decent cameras for a long time. Most are at least 4 or 5 mega pixels. More is not necessarily better. Look for optical zoom and ignore digital zoom.

Some cameras have their own special battery, and some use AA. Buying a rechargeable set will pay for itself pretty quickly.

Go to www.dpreview.com to research camera features and see reviews. Then go to a retailer and handle a few for yourself. One may just feel better than another.

The most important thing is to read the manual, find out what the camera settings are and what they do. You might want a beginner's book on photography as well.

Don't forget to budget for a larger memory card. Sometimes retailers bundle a card on sale with the camera, but memory has dropped in price a lot in the past year.

Good luck!

I think the most important question is to find out what do you want to photograph with your new camera?

Do you want something small & convenient to stick in a pocket and take snapshots of things, people, places that interest you?

Do you want to take pictures of wildlife, landscapes, close ups?

Do you want an entry level camera that gives you the flexibility in the future for growth?

How involved to you want to be with the settings on your camera?

Do you want it as automated as possible or do you like to learn & mess around with technical stuff?

How big do you want to enlarge the photographs?

Just a couple questions I found out I should have asked myself before going out to buy my first digital camera.

If you are able to be more specific to your photography interests than maybe a more specific suggestion can be made for you.

Hope this helps

Sony makes the best ones. Kodak has been trying to catch up in this market for a long time.
