If I say that this car is very mechanical then I might get laughed at, because the fact is too obvious. The mechanical quality is so common to a car that it needs not to be mentioned in an adjective as if it were special. It would like saying that this water is very wet or even air is windy. Similarly we cannot in real sense call ourselves spiritual because this is what we essential are - a person cannot be without his or her spirit or soul.

But we do need to identify certain traits, practices, attitudes and people as spiritual in life. The reason for this is that the aspects that constitute human mind are wide in range: we have material side of our mind that recognises and appreciate things with logic and reason - perhaps this where you say is the ‘disgusting mess’. The higher aspect of our mind however is transcendental. This aspect is able to recognise and appreciate things of the world that are abstract in nature. This aspect generate our needs that are at the top of the hierarchy of our need i.e. the need for self-actualisation, therefore the question – who am I? When we transcend material for the sake of abstract i.e. justice, wisdom, beauty and harmony, we become spiritual, or realise ourselves as spiritual.

A definition of 'spiritual' is very personal. For me, my journey has taken me through religion - which I have rejected to a place of greater understanding. I don't need a religion to follow I just have a personal understanding of 'what is'. That makes for some discomfort as those who follow a religion have a tendency to assume that any who does not subscribe to a religion somehow understand less, rather than more. For my comments to make real sense ..........if you are spiritually aware enough reading The Road Less Travelled, by M Scot Peck, and Further Along The Road Less Travelled will put thing in perspective

Spirituality = of you, mind, body.

Spirituality can also be construed as of being 'detached' from the binds of physical being...

Maslow uses 'self actualisation' at the top of his pyramid of needs... This is reached when the fullest of understanding of ones purpose and total partnership with their being occurs.. In this concept one could never 'die' because you would exist on a 'higher plain' than one of physical being.

As to the 'disgusting mess we're in'...

I believe that's politics and power... Which doesn't have any place in the concept of spirituality!!

Hey, well I would say that 'spiritual' means that you are yourself, and that there is something different about you - something that separates yourself from others. So, I suppose you could say that you are spiritual, if you believe that you have something no-one else does ... I know this is probably an odd definition, but I take religious studies lessons as apart of my course and well, this is how my lecturer put it to my class ... hope it helps you!

A focus on a person process of transformation in union with God as you understand God. It may or may not include involvement in a 'religious community'. Religious: Practicing the motions of faith, however well intentioned, sometimes without deep reflection about what each action really means.

Spiritual means seeking or being aware of spiritual things as opposed to material things. This may or may not be faith related and can refer to new age matters as well as those connected with religions.

Something concerning your soul. Your God given spirit which is not a tangible thing but something you feel such as your conscious. Something that tells you what your doing is wrong or right yet is just a feeling.
