Control Panel ->> QuickTime, go to TAB - "UPDATE" and look for section "Third Party" with a button named "Install..." and text next to it : "Find and install new third party QuickTime software.
Clicking on it will open a website.

Try a program called VLC, its free and has better luck with some video formats than Quicktime pro does.

depends on type of file and whether you have the mime settings and file type selected for that type of file in the preferences. If it isn't listed, then you have to go to the quicktime site and search for the file type plugin you need.
