It's what will have far more drastic effect on humans this century than all technology combined in the previous.
Nanotechnology is the building of materials, devices, and machines on an atom-by-atom basis, most of which the final products themselves will be sub-microscopic. Initially, this will result in things like computers that will get faster, smarter, and smaller at a very rapid rate; materials and coatings ideal for thousands of applications, such as diamond coatings for bearings and windows; replacements for many of the human organs that will be superior to the originals.
As the technology matures, amoung the most incredible possibilities is the introduction of billions of nanodevices into the human body which will be able to repair and maintain virtually every cell in your body, resulting in a cure for nearly all diseases, including aging. There's a good possibility that the majority of people alive today will have an indefinite lifespan because of this, provided the effort and money is invested.
The original classic book on this subject is "Engines of Creation" by Eric Drexler. Read it for some very amazing possibilities.

Nanotechnology is the design and manufacturing of mechanical and electrical devices that are very, very tiny. A nanometer is 0.000000001 meters! In general, any device whose size is under 100 nanometers is considered nanotechnology.

It's technology that deals with very tiny, intricate devices. And I'm not talking watch gears here, I'm talking far smaller even than that. Things like special materials that look smooth but cling to walls, or even (sometime in the future) clouds of flying machines that we can't see individually but which can repair our tissue or build houses or whatever.
