I know the story, or at least "a" story. I found one in Germany where it was called a "brautbecher" or "bride's cup".

The story is that a fellow wanted to marry a girl, but the father was against it, and said that when the fellow could make a cup that could contain two different drinks at the same time, where two people could drink one without spilling any, he would allow the marriage.

Here's a link to one I found.
