Mont Blanc in the Chamonix Valley [France] without a shadow of a doubt.. it's trendy, classy, good apres-ski and also not so far from Switzerland.I spent 6 weeks there a year or so ago climbing.. but they have great winter sports there...

Another more unusual place which has great skiing is Alyeska in Alaska [USA].. really... I flew into Anchorage a few years back in December and had the ususal misconceptions of it being absolutely freezing cold. When I arrived the temperature was below minus 10 but it was actually colder in the UK [as Alaska has a dry cold].

Alaska is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to and it is glorious in winter.. you may also get to see the Northern Lights.....the scenery is stunning, the people warm and it is a romantic place...

Kanderstagg in Switzerland- We went there about 8 years ago. Real quaint little town with several excellent restaurants, cool little shops and good skiing at several local resorts. What is best is how "away from it all," you will feel there. We felt like the town had just absorbed us in as well with the very friendly locals.

I will go there again, and again, and again.

Saas Fe might be more suitable, similar to Zermatt in that it is car free. If you really want some special nightlife though I think St Moritz would be a better bet. The skiing isn't up to much there though.

Zermatt. You can only get in and out by train. No cars allowed.
