I have a protruding disc in my back (between L3 and L4). My Dr origionally perscribed tylenol 3, but I was only allowed to take 6 a day. It didnt even to seem to cut the pain at all. Or barely at all.. Today she perscribed Tawlin. I read a artical that says this medication can actually cause pain. Is that what is going tohappen to me? Am I going to be in more pain than I already am? Any answers will help!!

I am waiting for the appointment with the surgeon who will be operating on my back, in the near future. I just want to know about the medication.

I think Tylenol 3 is totally inappropriate for your type of discomfort and I really would hate to see you put on Talwin. It will mess your head up for sure unless you have a long history of taking controlled substances and have built up a tolerance. Unfortunately, pain meds only treat the symptoms and not the cause of the symptoms. I took Talwin once and it helped pain-wise. I wasn't in any more pain and as a nurse I have never heard that particular rumor. Talwin isn't a drug that is commonly used for pain nowadays and I think that the thing you need to do is go to a physician that specializes in Pain Management. These doctors can really help you with your pain. Talk to your surgeon about seeing a Pain Management specialist. I am also wondering why the doctor prescribed only one Tylenol 3 six times a day. If you took two of them, the pain relief effects would last longer and you may not need all you are allowed every day. It is also good to not wait until your pain is really bad - it takes much longer and is more difficult to relieve.

Medical Dictionaries consider Pain Relievers the same as Pain Killers, though those of us who use opiate painkillers in high quantities don't necessarily equate them with Pain Relief drugs. It depends on if you're looking for a formal definition comparison or a subjective evaluation.

I do not know what the doctor's are going to do with your problem disc (operate?) but the amount of prescription drugs you are already on, could mean real problems, as Tylenol 3 has a lot of codeine in it, and if six a day isn't taking away the pain, I dont think any new med will take it away, these drugs are so addicting it would scare me to death to think of taking any more, or any stronger. I at one time worked with someone who took tawlin (if that is the proper spelling ) and she was in lala land most of the time.... I dont think you want that!! It is time to discuss this with your Doctor, you shouldn't take advice from non professionals .... could be a drastic idea to take anything not properly prescribed.

Hi Debi. Drugs do nothing to treat the CAUSE of your pain. You might consider seeing your family Chiropractor for a full spinal evaluation and treatment aimed at the cause of your pain. This is usually a better approach than just treating the symptom with dangerous drugs.

Best wishes and good luck.
