We are thinking of staying in the Kona area. Is this a good choice. We will be renting a jeep and want to explore places like beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes etc.
Is Kona a good location for such a trip?
We are thinking of staying in a cottage instead of a resort depending on the pricing.

Is there a better island for this type of trip?

If you want to explore places like beaches, waterfalls and volcanoes, the Big Island is your best bet. I am currently a resident of Hawaii and I have to say: Good choice!
Kona is a very nice place to stay, all of its resorts are near the shore, and the sunsets there are priceless. If you'd like to see more waterfalls and volcanoes, on the other side of the island there is this town called Hilo. It has a bunch of hotels as well, and is much closer to some of the waterfalls and volcanoes (especially Hawaii's currently active (but not dangerous!) volcano- Kilauea) Since its an island, a fun honeymoon trip might be to just cruise around the island, and stay at different hotels and bed and breakfasts instead of grounding yourself at one place. Trust me, it takes like only two days to go around the entire island, and its worth it.
Maybe I'll see you around...
Have fun on your honeymoon and congratulations!

The main attractions on the big Island are the volcano, the black sand beaches, Akaka and another water falls, and of course the beaches. I think you will have more fun on the island of Maui.

If you go to Maui, you gotta do the downhill bike ride. I don't recommend the sunrise one because you have to get up at 3:00 AM to get started up the mountain and its cold up there that early. If you are a romantic do it, but otherwise no. There are different bike companies and some don't take you all the way to the top, and some don't guide you back down. You can come down by yourself, there's only one road with just a little traffic, but if you are squeamish about riding in the street, a company that accompanies you down will help watch the traffic for you. I have been twice and prefer Maui Downhill to the others. These companies have web sites They will pick you up at your hotel, take you to their shop to pick out a wet-suit (for the cold and mist/rain shower maybe) and gloves and helmet; then take you up the mountain; then follow your group down so they can block traffic for your ride; then afterwards take you back to your hotel. Expect this activity to take 75-80% or more of the day.

The Road to Hana is a great drive (you need a rental car). It’s a 45 mile winding road that takes 4 hours to drive. Its like driving through the jungle; has a bunch of one lane bridges. Then drive past Hana to the Seven-Pools attraction and go for a swim.

Maui also has great beaches and the Maui Ocean Center, plus a winery that offers tasting and tours.

If you go to the Big Island you can still visit the other islands really easily. I have used Roberts for tours to the other islands and they are very good. Check out the web sites below.

Waimea Falls Park in north Oahu, is an 1,800 acre historic nature park. Native Hawaiian dancers perform recreations of life on the island 300 years ago. Cliff divers show off acrobatic skills at the park’s 45-foot tall waterfall. Below the falls you can swim or wade. Take off on a self-guided nature hike. You can partivipate in "soft" adventure activities like downhill mountain biking, horse riding and river kayaking.
