I have been tinkering with the idea of reporting someone I know to the IRS for a few years. What stops me is that I feel like I would be a bad person for being a snitch. Is it ethical to not tatttle-tail? Is it ethical to tattle-tail (not reporting income is a crime)?

Given the innumerable and absolutely pointless ways our federal government pisses away the tax revenue it collects from us, I'd say this person you know who isn't reporting his income is doing all of us a big favor. It's about time more people started refusing to fund these ridiculous entitlement programs that the nanny state seems to embrace.

Give him a medal, bake him some cookies, and keep your mouth shut.

As you point out, not reporting income is a crime. Your question really is "Is reporting a crime ethical?" If you don't like the law, you are ethically bound to work to change the law. Breaking the law will not accomplish that goal.

View these type of situations as follows:

If you are just trying to get revenge on that person, it is not very ethical. It will come back to "bite you" as they say.

However, if you are preparing the taxes, and part of your job is to prepare them in a proper and decent manner, then it is your duty.

Hmmm... under the laws of ethics, you would be a total douchebag if you ratted somebody out to the IRS.
