Sky will freeze and cut out if there is a big rainstorm on the way. Atmospherics are always a problem. If it's more than that, you may have a loose wire, something growing over your dish (I keep having to cut back my ivy as it keeps growing over the dish), a faulty card or a faulty sky box. If you do buy a new one, you will retain your Sky package as that is dependent on your card. However, I would explore the other possibilities first, or you could just be wasting money.

As others have already said, the signal from the sat is reduced during very cloudy weather and heavy rain. This should not happen too often, but if it does, it could be that your dish needs re-aligning, or perhaps some moisture has got into the cable from the dish. If so, this will reduce the signal even further. Unless you have the knowledge to check this yourself you need to contact a sat dealer to get the installation checked. One other thing, sometimes these boxes get a "bit upset" and pulling the plug from the mains and counting to ten before plugging back in will reset them, but remember to give the box time to download the channel info before panicking that it doesn't work!!
I would certainly have the installation checked out first before buying a new box.

Depends on the history of the replacement box. Sky regularly updates the software on your decoder box.
If the new box has been in recent use then your current channels will appear but it may take a day or two for the software to upgrade the box.
If the new box has been disconnected for a long period of time then you may have to phone Sky for a manual update because the upgrade of software versions is too great for automatic update.
With your problem, I would replace the box as "freezes" should only occur during extreme weather conditions and should sort themselves out pretty quickly (seconds rather than hours)

Our sky box does exactly the same, especially when the weathers bad which is a right pain when you're half way through a film!!
If you get a new digibox as long as you transfer your veiwing card you'll still receive all the channels you subscribe to.
Hope it helps.
