Cover them in vasline or petroleum jelly. They won't be able to breathe and they will burrow back out. Keep your tweezers handy and when they are out, grab 'em and flush them down the toilet.

Then go to your vet and get a preventative flea and tick medicine. There are lots. Ticks carry diseases such as lyme, you need to prevent this from happening again.

Remove them. First kill them by applying alcohol or fingernail polish directly to the tick by means of a Q-tip. After a few minutes grasp the dead tick as close to the skin as possible and apply steady traction until it releases its hold. If the head remains fixed to the skin, there is no need for concern. In most cases this is only a local reaction that clears up in a few days. Only rarely does a tick bite become infected. If there are a lot of ticks use an insecticide dip made for dogs.

If you keep your dog on Revolution or Frontline type treatments you won't ever have to worry about ticks, they will not live on your dog more than a day or so. This is your best treatment as it helps prevent many diseases.
For a quick fix, go to Wal-Mart and get a bottle of Flea & Tick spray. Spray directly on tick to soak it, repeat 4 hrs later. It will be dead in a day or two and then fall off on it's own or can be easily removed with tweezers.
All that stuff about nail polish remover, alcohol, etc. has been proven to be just "old wives tales".

We always light a match and let it burn for a second then blow it out and hold the tip of it on the tick's back. That will kill it and then you can pull it out with tweezers. You will need two people though.

I concur with the other advice. Vaseline/petroleum jelly work well. I have also used "Vick's". Not fond of the match trick..it does work, but the match still has to be hot, and I wouldn't take the chance on burning my dogs, or at the least frightening them. Front-line seems to be the best preventative. So go to your vet and get a supply. I would stay away from the "cheap" flea medication, it doesn't work half as well as Front-line.

Get him to the vet. Then buy Frontline, its the only comprehensive treatment , includes. ticks, fleas , etc. Dont be fobbed off with any other brand. cos some just kill the b--==s but dont PREVENT , Frontline does both. I am not a salesperson from the company either, just a normal pet loving individual. Go for it., and quick.

One remedy to get rid of ticks and fleas on hunting dogs is to bath them in Pine Sol and Clorox mix. Two cups of Clorox and one cup of Pine sol in a garden sized tub then fill with water. Works on humans too to get rid of tick and red bugs.

take a match and burn the end of them. try using vaseline on them, since they breath thru their bodies, they can't breath and will back out or sufffocate and die. rubbing alcohol will only work once you have them off and can put them in it. they are really hard to get off once the heads have burrowed in. but the match trick usually works well good luck

Petroleum jelly should soften their grip.
