I just ate half a packet of Nice biscuits and half a tub of peanut butter. I worked out that the total of this binge came to 1,500 calories. This is larger than most meals I eat. I cannot explain why I couldn't stop eating the biscuits and the peanut butter. Why?

None of the explanations so far explain it for me. It could be that I rarely have any Nice biscuits or peanut butter, and so I felt like gorging on them. I also had a fat free light calorie meal, and went on a 18 mile bike ride today.

I think the problem occurs if I don't feed myself properly. It then causes me to binge. It makes sense if you think about bears storing up fat for winter hibernation when food is scarce.

Hi,

It sounds as if u needed the good fats that r in the peanut butter, if u r eating low fat and exercsing vigoursley u may have depleted ur bodies energy fat stores and that made u binge as ur body recognised that wot u were eating was a good source of fast energy and fat!

Other reasons to binge eat is depression, hormone levels and starvation.

Boredom. And because it tastes good, must say peanut butter doesn't last long with me, either. You like the taste, and the sensation of eating, and because it's spread over a longer time than you'd spend sitting down to eat a meal, you don't get full up like you would do eating a meal.

I used to find I was the same with squash when writing my dissertation. I'd suddenly realise that I'd drunk 6 pints of squash in an evening just because I was stopping to think, taking a gulp, going back, repeating, going to get another drink cos it got me away from the computer, staring out the window drinking, then getting up to go to the toilet which again got me away from the computer.

I was much better hydrated though. Despite all the peanut butter sandwiches that went alongside it.

Binge eating frequently has an emotional basis, but judging from your comments I doubt that was a factor in your particular instance. It's more likely that your body over-reacted to a nutritional imbalance. In your additional comments, you said that you ate a low-fat low-cal meal and exercised hard... I'd suggest that you need to look at your entire way of eating to solve the problem. I have a complete abhorrance of any foods claiming to be low-fat. Fat is not a bad thing. Fat does not make you fat. Fat is not only necessary to your body but is very filling. The most important thing is to maintain a steady blood-sugar level. It's likely that having such a nutritionally unsatisfying meal and exercising so hard made your blood-sugar plummet. Your body jumped into defensive mode and yelled 'eat, eat, eat' at you, hence the binge. Why not think about a low-carb way of eating. It will regulate your blood-sugar, quell your hunger pangs and make you highly unlikely to binge in the future. Ignore the government suggested food pyramid. A dietary balance of 5% carbs, 25% protein and 70% is ideal if you need to lose weight. Up it to 10%, 30%, 60% if you just want to maintain your current weight.

Discipline woman Discipline! I am assuming you are female!
It's as most people said, emotional stress lonliness etc. But also as womwn we crave extra calories once a month so you are forgiven if thats the reason, the other deeper reason behind why we do it is that a hormone is secreted when we have food going in and also when we have a full tum it's connected to the sleep and feel good hormones dopamine and serotonin so thats why you almost feel you ate without even noticing. Dont worry work it off tomorrow!

Woah! That's a whole days worth of calories.

I think people eat from boredom, depression, loneliness or even because they just don't notice they're doing it - like when you're watching TV.

But hey, if you don't do it too often I wouldn't worry - it's always nice to have a blow out now and again.

If you do it regularly it might be worth having a chat to a friend about it - or have a look at eating sites on the net

I am the same sometimes. Not realy sur why. It's prob just the sugar which is like a drug. Once you've tried it you can't stop. Plus prob depends on your weight. If your skinny then your prob more likely to eat and not be bothered how much. And if your really fat the same.

First and foremost reason is loneliness, the second is boredom and the third is plain old emotional imbalances like Stress

generally stress, they haven't yet learned healthy ways to cope, and eating makes them feel better....plus it gives them something else to stress about instead......something that may be more solvable........then they don't have to confront the real issue.......hope you enjoyed this oprah episode
