I have done a search for your william, and like rustskipp I cannot find any wjc, born in 1883. I found wjc born in Port-sea Hampshire born 1887 I have found you the volume & page numbers they are 2b and page 501. If you want to message me I can do another search for wjc. Sometimes the enumerator who did the census survey would use the information given to him by the householder, or he would just guess at a birth date or the spelling of a name. I would love to help if I can, good luck ..

Family Search has 187 hits on William Coates, but none born in 1883. You might check GENFORUM for someone else interested in the same person. Here are some other sites too, that might be productive. You may have to post a question, and wait for a response, or you may get lucky. These are sites I think will apply to finding William. Good luck.
