Rabies is, thankfully, very rare. Or something, could be possible. Rabies immunization is cheap and readily available.

Any new cat should be quarentined from other cats in the household until they can be checked for Feline Leukemia, Feline AIDS and FIP. Some folks opt to keep the newcomer isolated until after the initial vet visit.

If you have no other cats, or your cats have been immunized against those diseases, then there should be no serious problem. Apart from the rabies you asked about, which would be highly unlikely, there is nothing that cat carries that could harm a human.

there is really no way to check for rabies (other than cutting the brain out, obviously). the cat should be quarantined for 2-3 weeks, then you know for sure. however, feline distemper, heart worm, FIV, ringworm and a few other nasties are not to joke about either. Get the cat to a vet if you get a chance.
plus, are you SURE it's a stray cat and not one of your neighbor's free-running cats? just because he/she does not have a collar does not mean it's a stray. a microchip could be in the cat (a vet can tell you, they have a scanner)

The incidence of rabies in the domestic feline is almost nil as far as I can find out from the internet. Certain wild animals are vectors for rabies and it varies in the US. Raccoons are vectors in the East and bats carry rabies in the county in whick I live in CA.

Any cat you take into your home (especially if you have other cats) should go to a vet first to be checked for FIV and leukemia as they are common in "stray" cats. Cats with both diseases can live and may need special considerations for their care and the prevention of exposure to other cats.

Any time we take in a stray, the first thing I do is keep it from my other pets till I can take it to the vet and at least get a rabies shot and a basic exam.
