My son would like to know (He's 12):-

a slice of buttered bread/toast always lands butter side down...a cat always lands on its feet, if you put a slice of buttered bread/toast on top of the cat butter side up, would the toast land butter side down or would the cat land on it's feet!

The things that keep 12 year olds awake at night!

Your son sounds like an imaginitive young man! He must have quite a sense of humour!

My answer - I have absolutely no idea - but thanks for giving me a laugh and something bizarre to mull over!

I kind of think that as the two fell, the toast would slip off of the cat's back, do a flip, and land butter side down. Then the cat would still be able to land on its feet, sans toast!

Its a fact that cats love butter and are also very agile. If you stick buttered toast on a cats back and drop it off the table the cat will arch its back, twist around and quickly lick all the butter off the toast then twist back round again to land on its feet. This manoevre negates the 'buttery toast' effect since all the yummy butter will be in the cats tummy. The toast will doubtless contain much cat slobber but theres no scientific proof that this has any peculiar gravitational qualities. I wouldn't eat it though.

In the almost impossible event that a piece of buttered toast lands butter-side-up, you have to ring the pope who declares it a miracle, and sends some priests round to bum your kids off.

Then the heavier entity may be the dominant bouyancy, so the cat might nonetheless land on its ft yet may be walking around looking ridiculous till somebody bumped off the slice of toast, does that help - loopy guy or woman? Lol

strap the buttered bread to the cat and throw it out of a 10 foot window and see what happens.

The cat would stop in mid air, and just keep spining, between it's feet and the toast! Then, I'm not sure... I think it might explode or... the universe might implode or something like that...
