I guess my questions is, ladies, what was your first urology appointment like? I am going for frequent UTI's (ive had 3 in the last year, i guess that qualifies as frequent) and I am scared of whats going to happen in the appointment, particularly because the urologist is a male. That discomfort factor makes me a little nervous...but its more the kinds of tests he's going to do, or the tests that he might end up ordering, that really scare me. I dont want to go!!! Can anyone offer any comforting words or insight as to what happens at your first urology appointment???

Dont be frightened, it really isnt that bad. I cant say what tests he might order but if it gets the propblem sorted then it will be worth it. Some of the possible tests are, urine testing (easy peeeesy!), ultrasound scan (easy peasy again), X rays (ditto), radio isotope tests (similar to X ray but a dye is injected into your arm and the progress of it is tracked uding a special type of x ray). So you see it may not be as bad as you think! Good luck...;

It depends on the doctor but I suspect he will mainly just ask a lot of questions and try to get an understanding of what your hystory is. Most likely they will want a urine sample while there...but that is no big deal. He may order some tests but they don't often perform them right off the bat.

If he does choose to do a test in office it would most likely be an in office cystoscopy. They are unfortable but not painful usually. What happens is a nurse will insert a catheder into your urethra that has a cammera so that he can look into your bladder. It mainly just embarrissing like a gyno visit.
From now on when you think you have a UTI make sure you ask for a culture. General lab tests can show possible UTI when it is actually a different condition.

I hope that nothing is going on more than UTI's and all is well!

A urologist is not likely to do anything too uncomfortable to you, probably just palpate your abdomen and see if you have any lower back pain. Otherwise, he'll want a urine specimen. If he is suspicious for other problems besides the frequent UTI's, he may order a cystoscopy (in which a little camera is inserted into the bladder to look around for abnormalities) Like huggy weel said - a ultrasound or an abdominal MRI or CT scan. None of this will happen on your first visit and possibly not at all!! So don't stress!

Are you sexually active? UTI's can often be prevented easily by urinating immediately after sex.

I am male. I am sorry I just want to help you. I don't know anything about ladies problem or doctors. My only suggestion is: "sometimes in life we have to do what we have to do". I hope that will mean something to you.
