Since birds do not have teeth they need sand or grit to grind up their food. They get this by eating sand or small stones. These are stored in an organ called a gizzard. The muscles in the gizzard move to grind the food for easier digestion. I suggest you get a book on raising canaries so you can properly care for them.

the person above me "wizard" is exactly the same what I was going to type. Canaries need additional supplements besides food. they do need gravel to help them grind up food. You can buy them at pet stores, sometimes they look like sand mixed with chopped up shellfish.
good luck

no longer intentionally. they're the sweetest maximum shy creatures. they do no longer prefer to be dealt with and that i'm specific in the event that they felt their existence became into in jeopardy they might attempt the chew and flight recurring yet their fright is plenty greater desirable than their chew. They like to sing, exceedingly men. placed them by a sunny window, cover the cage at night, supply a reliable seed blend and slightly end result and vegetables and that they are going to be happy perpetually.

many reasons.........
they need stones and grit for digestion,
they need to file their beaks,
they may be nesting,
thay may just be chewers and it's better the paper than to have them pull feathers out!
keep an eye out, look at the droppings, if all seems normal it could just be a fetish, if something seems wierd see a avian vet!
good luck,
Tanya
