I was once told that we don't need to find new things in the world we just need to see it with different eyes.
Have you ever taken a photo of a lampost whilst lying on your back? Totally different perspective - totally different photo.
It's when you look at some random item, at a particular time, space or angle frozen in a snapshot of time and think - 'that would make such a cool photo!'

Diane Arbus said "A photo is a secret about a secret. The more you look the less you know."
Basically I think it means that there is a lot that a photographer chooses to include in the photo to make a personal statement. It seems to be an illusion since the photo is about some actual thing, but it is the photographer that is making the choices about what aspect of reality is in the photo.
For example, Arbus has a famous photo of a boy in Central Park NY holding a toy hand grenade, and is has this crazed expression on his face. But the contact sheet of that particular roll of film shows that the boy was happy and charming looking and kind of fooling around with poses for her...she choose the one that looked crazed because it represented something personal to her. In a very real way, its like a self portrait...only its someone else in the picture.

A photograph suggests a thought or evokes an emotion or a memory. What do you think of if you look at a poster with a bold red letter "A"? You are not simply registering the presence of the image. You think about the scarlet letter. You think about a grade in school. You think about Grade A milk or vitamin A. A photograph is something that you want to escape into or run away from. It is rarely a mere recording of a visual event.

If you mean that what we are actually seeing is not the photograph but the light reflected from the photograph then yes, but that is true of all images seen by the eye!

A photograph is a depiction of an interpretation of reality, not reality itself.
