When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, he saw that the people had become impatient, and they were worshipping false idols with pagan practices. He was so angry that he asked God to destroy the believers. This isn't what happened.
Moses was not allowed to enter the Promised Land, because of his anger. The people could not enter the Promised Land either, since they had worshipped false gods. Consequently, they wandered in the Wilderness of Sinai, until they died of natural causes.
Only their children were allowed to enter the Promised Land, since they had not worshipped false idols.
