It must be because performance art sucks and religion sucks ultimately.

Some of the rituals may be likened to an art form, but I would not say that religion is strongly tied to perfomance art. Performance art is a form of free expression.

It is a form of art, no doubt about it. The relationship between faith and art has always been strong. The weird thing to watch is how this connection is being ghettoized. Religious artists are not given any big name, New York style recognition. Only secular artists. High art has been closed to religion for a long time now. This is because the new gods are science, money and power.

If God could be pleased merely by great behavior, then yes, religion would be nothing more than performance. However God looks at the heart, the motives of a person, not behavior, so performance just doesn't cut it with him.

Keen observation. Religious concepts and imagery are quite stirring and beautiful.

No way. Artists are iconoclasts, free-thinkers, non-conformists, etc.
