There is no such thing. It is like saying...what is the best car? Every person has different needs. Every room is different, every budget is different.
Your best bet is to work with a true home theater professional who can tailor a system to meet your specific needs and customize a system for YOU. People making general equipment recommendations who don't know your room layout, your budget, how many people will be watching, your seating arrangement, your acoustics and your display are doing you a disservice.

Don't buy a home theater in a box. Spend the extra money and build your home theater from the ground up. Yamaha or Denon reciever, polk audio speakers, velodyne subwoofer. Not sure how much you would like to spend, but you'll have a kick *** home theater system with those things.

- Pioneer Elite universal DVD player
- Onkyo or Yamaha or Pioneer surround sound receiver
Over $1,000...
- Arcam FMJ receiver or processor and amp
- Arcam FMJ DVD player
- Silverline Audio Prelude mains and rears
- Silverline Audio Center Stage center channel

I tried for years to avoid spending money that I just didn't have. I kept buying the cheap $100 systems. They were always a disappointment. They'd die after about a year's usage. Last year for Christmas, I spent the money. I spent about $1500 and bought a JVC. It's a thousand watt system and love it.

The ones at Wal-Mart for $40. They have worked fine for me.
