She only does it if nobody is watching so she knows it's wrong. She mainly does her business in the garden but in the early hours of the morning she will go downstairs and poo in the living room. Even if I go down with her and open the back door for her she will wait till I have gone back to bed and do it sometimes...especially if it's raining! She also pees in the kid's bedrooms, again if nobody is in them, but she never does it in mine! (She sleeps in my room).
I am buying a house with my partner and moving in with him in a few weeks. I have to stop her or she will ruin our new house, and probably our relationship.
I have a 4 year old cavvy dog as well. He was toilet trained easily as a puppy and would never mess in the house.

First of all, she is not hiding it from you, and she does not know it's wrong. She is doing it without you knowing because she knows that if you catch her, you will punish her. You've (unknowingly) conditioned her into hiding it from you. Another reason she uses other rooms as her bathrooms is because dogs will NOT soil where they sleep. It's an instinct bred into them from the time they were wild.

You must go outside with her when you want her to go potty, then praise her when she does, no matter how little. If it takes an hour for her to go bathroom outside, then stay with her that entire hour and watch her. House-training is only as hard as a person makes it, and to place human feelings on a dog is wrong. They are not children...they are not even human.

THEY ARE DOGS.

If you are not willing to take the time to properly housebreak your dog, then you shouldn't even have her. Simple as that. Yes, this is a harsh way of saying it; however, I have little to know patience for people who do not take care of their animals.

I have two dogs. a 1 1/2 yr old shitz-tzu mix (Maggie) and a 10 week old rat-cha (Minnie) Minnie is being more difficult to train than Maggie was. Maggie was easy. Minnie prefers to go outside and as long as I take her out immediately after meals and long naps we are doing good. BUT if was raining or cold it was a different story. I started using puppy pads, by the back door, and that help a lot. Also If catch her "in the act" in the wrong place, I give her a stern "NO" and I place her on the pad. It has attractants in it for the dog to get the idea. Also be sure to use an enzyme cleaner on all accidents so they don't "smell " the old spot and go back to it. But I did have to put up a baby gate to keep her out of my son's room... his dirty clothes are too inviting a toilet to her....(teenagers-- ugh!)

You're not going to like this answer, but your dog doesn't do it behind your back because she 'knows its wrong'; she does it behind your back because you get angry.
You also say its only the one dog, but how do you know if its being done out of your sight? Dog trainers lose count of the times they hear this!

Stop messing around and make a point of housetraining your dog. Put her on the lead and take her out to the toilet and wait while she goes, then reward her. Ignore any mess indoors. And crate her.
That way if any mess appears you'll know you have two dogs to housetrain.

Please get the booklet about target training (its a type of housetraining particularly suited to adult dogs) from the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors.

yes it pretty simple dogs will not mess their own bed and the way to train them a lot of people think it is cruel but it isnt and that is to just crate train her do it for 6 months just on a night time then give her run of house again guarnteed she will have learnt to hold her bowels and bladder and wont messs in the house again also every where where she hassed messed in the past you want to buy some special cleaner from your local petshop that will cut through the enzymes in the scent and there fore she wont be able to smell anymore where she has messed kindest regards Joe

Once again. DOGS DO NOT KNOW THEY HAVE DONE SOMETHING WRONG!!!! they know you are angry and respond accordingly.
Feed her in the morning, this allows her to empty her bowels during the day. Take (not let) her out and use a command word so that she knows what she is supposed to be doing. You will have to retrain her to remind her.Take her out last thing at night (11pm) to make sure that she is empty. Could she have colitis?
As much as I hate crating a dog, if you have done all of the above, then put her in a crate to sleep at night.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT rub the dog's face in it, or hit her, or scold her. Dogs, especially smaller breeds, are very sensitive to negative enforcement. She is doing it when nobody is around because she is afraid, not because she knows it's wrong. Small dogs can also be sensitive to weather, which explains her not wanting to do her business when it's raining.

When you are not able to be around her and watch for warning signals she may be sending you, she needs to be crated. A crate needs to be large enough for her to stand up and turn around in- not so big that they can mess in one end and sleep in the other.

To the people who advocate rubbing or hitting or scolding: you are the reason dogs are euthanized in shelters. Dogs are easily scarred by negativity; they can back into an un-fixable shell and stay there; they can also switch to a part of their brain that does not allow them to think clearly- thus resulting in aggression. And when a dog enters a shelter that is too timid, or aggressive, it is deemed "unadoptable" and it is KILLED.

Please ... do not treat your dog negatively. We do not smear our children's faces in their underwear if they have an accident; we do not trap them in the bathroom for hours if they have an accident; and we certainly do not hit our children.

Crate training and constant reinforcement. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE POSTERS WHO ADVOCATE HITTING YOUR DOG IN ANY WAY!! Consistency in training is key. The dog should not be left unattended in the house at any time until it is trained. If you cant watch her, she should be in her crate.

She's not peeing in your bedroom because she considers that her den (where she sleeps) and wouldn't want to mess that.

She's also challenging your alpha status (authority).

Try putting some biological washing powder in the areas where she does her business. This gets rid of the smell. Don't use disinfectant as this gradually becomes attractive to the dog. Baking powder is another deterant.

if i was to guess what to do i would say to not give way and let the dog do it again.after the dog does that either put it on a short lease out side for the rest of the night or put it in a cage {if rarely put in cage} for the rest of the night.also when it does that be firm and say NO or BAD.then do either of the 2.try this for about a week or so.if dosen't get better u can e-mail me for more suggestions.
