Looking at the gun does not settle it. Is there a serial number range for "post-64" rifles?

Bound's hubby here:

While checking the serial number can give you a definite answer, there is actually a "fast-track" method to gain an idea if you rifle is pre-'64 or post-'64.

The big difference that separates pre- and post- '64 Model '94 rifles is the manufacturing process and the fit of the parts. Pre-'64 rifles generally were hand-fitted and "tighter". Post-'64 rifles were machined for a drop-in fit and are "looser". If you hold your rifle, one hand on the fore-arm, and one on the wrist of the stock, shake the rifle and listen ... if there is a noticeable rattle, you have a post-'64 rifle ... if the rifle is relatively silent, you have a pre-'64 rifle.

As odd as this may sound, it does hold true. I have a early depression era Model '94 ... shake it and it is quiet! Some of the post-'64s I have handled makes me wonder why deer don't hear the hunter coming, just due to the rifle alone!

Good luck!

Go to Winchester's website and enter the serial number. It will tell you in which year the gun as made.
