I, too, was raised to clean my plate. As a result of that and other factors I developed an eating disorder. An obsession with eating - eating too much, too much household stress related to "cleaning your plate", trying to stay thin, etc. are all problematic and can contribute to eating disorders.
Now I put smaller portions on my plate. And if I cannot eat all of it I leave the remains on the plate. I would rather do that than to overeat.
You are correct, however, that at a buffet it is hard to watch someone overload their plate and then throw much of it away. Two days ago I saw a woman put apx. 12 pieces of pizza on one small plate from a buffet. I would have been embarrassed doing it or being with her. She was significantly overweight - and her children were obese. Darn!

Well, the situation depends though..if the restaurant's size of serving is huge i might. For an example if i had steamboat for my dinner and some places doesnt exactly allow you to order what you want instead its on a set A,B or C depending on how many ppl you were with but otherwise i try to clean up my plate. There's no point in forcing yourself to stuff up all the food if you are already full. Its bad for health even if its a wastage.Better to waste then risk your health.

My husband heaps his plate into a huge garbage pile of food and enthusiastically eats every bite. I only take a spoonful of what looks good to me....AND eat every bite. Sometimes it means I don't get all I'd like of something, but there is nothing left on my plate to throw away. My daughter-in-law thought it was barbaric to clean your plate. And I thought it was thoughtless to leave food on her plate. We weren't poor, but food served at our gatherings was too expensive to end up in the garbage just so she could show the group how "cultured" she was. That was many years ago and still rankles me, can you tell? I was definately offended.

The problem with making kids clean their plate is that a lot of parents tend to forget that a child's stomach is not as big as an adult's and making them finish their food when they are not hungry can lead to eating disorders and obesity. Now, if someone is throwing food out and then eating dessert, that is wrong.

Well, it's not cool to waste food but hey if you can't eat it you can't eat it, and listen you can't always expect someone to know exactly how much they are going to need to eat before they get full, and it's not good to stuff yourself either. As far as the pudding goes yeah that is kinda ridiculous.

no longer at homestead, I in basic terms take as much as i will consume. At a eating place i will leave nutrition, yet ask for a take-homestead container and end it later or day after today. If i'm determining to purchase it, i'm eating the full element!

I do not waste food.
On my plate or to spoil in the frig.
No sense in getting upset when others do.
