I don't know but I do try to watch saying it since a kid is a baby goat. So I never called my children kids or my grand-children that.

The word "KID" is actually in the dictionary and in the bible with the meaning of "baby /young goat". It has always meant BABY GOAT. Over time people have become lazy like with all things even when it comes to refering to their human offspring. It does not Derive from any "Germanic" or "nordic" root word of any sort reffering to child. In reality, humans began calling their offspring "kid" when a child reached a certain age or became unruly. The word was also used by those that really did not want children to begin with and saw them as a burden. Do your research people and stop letting others mislead you and convence you to relate your child to a baby goat. If you call your child a baby goat, your child will behave as one.

Children - when the 'child' is 13 or 14 is insulting to the kid. How many teenagers or even high school kids (11+) like to be called children???

the reason people use slang is that it is easier... that is the point of it and acceptable in relaxed communication. but in formal circumstances, most people would say children.
relax a bit.... language has always had its slang and formality, and people will always switch between both depending on the occasion.
i would just like to add that if it wasn't kid... the slang could just have easily been cabbage ... can you imagine? have you seen the cabbages today? or have you seen the cabs today?
lol!

It is a frequnently used nickname,
children = kids
mother = mom, mommy, mum, mummy
dad = pop, pops, dad, daddy etc
As for the religious side of things, arguably a professional should use a more formal form of address than a parent or friend.
Do you find that really surprising?

Kid is more informal and has a more endearing connotation to it. It's used as a familiar form of address.
Children is more formal and in turn makes it seem distant. It's very "Mommy Dearest."
It makes sense for a loving parent to refer to their child as their kid. A priest should use the formal, child.

To be honest I can't stand people saying, dare I put it "my kids" It makes me cringe. Why can't they say my child, my children, or my son/daughter. I have nothing against said people i just find it sticks in my throat. I think it's just a slang term. To me kids are baby goats.

As with anything, things and times change. Do you hear people say thee or thy anymore? The English language is always changing, so just change with it. I thinks it's OK, it's better than some of the things I hear people call their kids in town!

Do you ALWAYS call your children by their entire first name? Ex if you have a daughter and her name is Cassandra do you ALWAYS call her Cassandra or do you shorten it and call her Cassie? It's the same thing with child/children. It also seems more endearing, in my opinion.
