Or are they just reacting to a more dangerous environment? It seems as if kids these days do not have a lot of free time outdoors. They spend it either indoors (online) or in scheduled actvities.

I think there is a bit of a split. There are still a lot of people who let their kids wander around alone and make their own way to and from places; this group asserts that the kids have to learn to live in the world they way it is. Strangely, these parents also don't always disclose to their kids the facts about what goes on because they don't want to scare them.
I think the world has changed and people have to change the way they live in it.
If you lived in the jungle would you let your kids out at night even though you knew there were hungry lions waiting? In our world, there are people who are predators and we need to live in awareness.

I know what you mean. Child predators have always been around...people are just more sensitive about it b/c the media takes every chance to scare the living day light out of us. You obviously don't let kids under the age of 6 outside alone, but after that let the kids play. I think its more important to make kids aware of the dangers that are out their, but kids need to have a little bit of freedom.

There are things going on in the world now that today's parents NEVER had to worry about as a child.

I could cross the street KNOWING the cars would stop -- now they will hit you and run.
Child porn did not exist (or so rarely, that we did not hear about it) - now it is all over.
I can go on and on and on, but you get the idea. If parents seem overprotective - maybe it is because they actually care for their kids. My grandkids NEVER play outside unsupervised.

I think many parents don't protect their children enough, where I live, most of these kids are raising themselves and are always left alone.. I am not overprotective but, I do protect my children.

definitly you wont let your kid play on the corner because of predators, but you will let them online, or worse yet play with Mr. Jesus Juice
