Any fruit and vegetables count towards your five a day.
Quick guide to fruit portions:
Fresh fruit:
Small-sized fruit: 2 or more, for example 2 plums, 2 satsumas, 3 apricots, 2 kiwi fruit, 7 strawberries, 14 cherries, 6 lychees
Medium-sized fruit: 1 medium fruit, such as 1 apple, banana, pear, orange, nectarine, or 1 sharon fruit
Large fruits: half a grapefruit, 1 slice of papaya, 1 slice of melon (2-inch slice), 1 large slice of pineapple, 2 slices of mango (2-inch slices)
Dried fruit:
1 tablespoon of raisins, currants, sultanas, 1 tablespoon of mixed fruit, 2 figs, 3 prunes, 1 handful of banana chips
Tinned fruit:
Roughly the same quantity of fruit that you would eat as a fresh portion: 2 pear or peach halves, 6 apricot halves, 8 segments of tinned grapefruit
Juices:
A glass (150ml) of 100% juice (fruit or vegetable juice or smoothie) counts as 1 portion, but you can only count juice as 1 portion per day, however much you drink. This is mainly because it contains very little fibre. Also, the juicing process 'squashes' all the natural sugars out of the cells that normally contain them, which can be harmful for teeth - especailly if you drink a lot of it in between meals

The confusion is what 1 piece of fruit or vegetables means and this is bad.
The fruit and vegetables portion means 100 grams - many people get this wrong, after all would you expect a grape to have the same vitamins as a pineapple?
Remember this is not a maximum, it is a minimum so eat more fruit and vegetables for additional health benefits.
Do not consider fruit juice in your count, it does not have the fibre to slow absorption of fruit sugar so can spike your blood sugar and lead to problems with your pancreas over a long duration.

I think most fruit and veg are recommended as most people (including me) dont eat enough,
I would imagine any fruits and vegetables are beneficial, not too sure about potatoes though. Especially fried ones!
I know fruit juice can count towards it.
Blueberries are a known superfood. And avocado's are very good for you.
If I had to pick 5 i'd pick
Avocado
Carrots
Blueberries
Broccoli
Sweetcorn

The 5-a-day fruits and vegetables can be anything you like. An average portion of fruit or veg with meals. Fruit juice (250ml) can count as one.

It is different in UK to US. In UK it should be 80g or more of each fruit or vegetable or an equivalent amount, i.e. 1x 8oz glass of fruit juice.
Two portions of the same item would not count.
An apple is about 80g, as is a banana.
Dried fruit count too, but watch the calories/sugar as this is much higher in dried fruit.
Also potatoes do not count as either a veg or fruit as they are so low in nutrients.

Try to get a couple of leafy greens in your diet. Other than that any combo is good. Try to stay away from dried fruit as it has a lot more sugar in it when dehydrated. Juice also has too much sugar...even if it says "No sugar added" it takes so much fruit to make 1 glass of juice...that is why pediatricians recommend watering down juice for babies/toddlers. Children should eat fresh fruit instead of drinking juice.

The food pyramid changed a few years ago. The website is interactive and is based on your sex, age, activity level etc. Fruit - you need 1 1/2 to 2 cups a day - based on the above information Vegetables - you need 2 1/2 cups to 3 cups per day based on the sex, age, activity level criteria. Veggies in the food pyramid don't include grains.....

Any variety of 5 fruits and veg. A serving is about a cup full e.g. an orange, a small bunch of grapes. Try and have a mixture of colours too - especially green, leafy veg and orange things like pumpkin or sweet potato.
